Freedom implies responsibility, but life is easier without responsibility. Culture influences by aversion to risk, meritocracy and social influences. The more important the public sector, less individual freedom, and more taxes and red tape, because this is based on individual mistrust.

The 2008 financial crisis and today’s healthcare crisis confirm public incapacity in Spain because of politicians’ management, who scorn the private sector. We suffer the fraud of what is public being preferable to what is private. It is easier to deceive citizens than to convince them of the truth. Self-interested propaganda is in charge of that.

The illusion that public spending is something unrelated to one’s own money, and businesspeople cannot be trusted, is outlined in many population strata. The ideological intensity is such that when the rival’s management is to be underrated, it is accused of wishing to privatise services as if private were a synonym of bad. Deceiving involves identifying businesspeople as exploiters, but public political corruption is hidden.

The welfare state was invented in the UK with Winston Churchill in the 1940s. The public cost is included in taxes, but what is private must be financed individually. This includes many supporters because it seems free of charge. Who quantifies the cost of inefficient public management apart from freed trade unionists, political advisors and public corruption?

Public managers’ political serfdom frequently prevents managers from making the correct decision, particularly to not lose votes for their ideological brand. Civil servants, unless morally honest, which is increasingly scarce, tend to work as little as possible unless promotion is involved. In public administrations, a very high percentage of administration workers do not go to work at the expected time. Recent pieces of evidence appear in YouTube. This is not the case of private employment because whoever pays wages ensures that working hours are met.

Public education in Spain has been getting worse for decades. Making the effort has disappeared. Students have got used to being victimised, to be given achievements for nothing. Wherever indoctrination is desired, it is practiced without impunity. Secondary Education teachers are the most overvalued and less evaluated civil servants. They do not want problems and look the other way, even with school bullying.

The myth of education as a social equaliser, as the left claims and as the right keeps quiet about, is false because expected levels and effort are lowered. No social levelling exists without effort. Education acted as an equaliser from the 1950s to the 1980s, with a demanding system of grants that motivated effort, and allowed those who were capable to make the effort, socially ascend and pitch in to help the country. Nowadays, public education expects neither demands nor efforts of students; teachers neither motivate nor control, which equals widespread ignorance and frailty towards life.

The quality of public health care is also overvalued. Queues for primary health care, delays in being referred to specialists, lack of basic means is alarming. This health care suffers from few material resources and deficient management. We have too few doctors and ICU beds compared to Germany or the UK, but have double the politicians per capita.

In today’s healthcare crisis, for ideological reasons the government has marginalised private health care by not putting to good use its capacity to provide citizens and firms with tests that they both wish to pay. It no longer voluntarily allows its private UCI beds to be used. The miracle of the IFEMA trade fair installations, used as a COVID-19 hospital in Madrid, was inspired in private healthcare with the army’s support.

The countries worst hit by the healthcare crisis, apart from Spain (USA, Italy, UK) set up committees for top-quality private-inspired economic reconstruction. Spain has committees of mediocre politicians who serve their ideology, which allows us to recover, but more slowly. We will be baled out at a very high cost before we realise it. Where is the assumed advantage of what is public?

Post published in Las Provincias

El mito de la izquierda de la superioridad de lo público sobre lo privado no se sostiene Hay países como el Reino Unido y USA, donde se confía más en la libertad individual que en el Estado, y en otros, se prefiere que éste resuelva cuanto más mejor.
