Entrepreneurs motivated by incentives to benefit take risks and allow their country to make progress, which creates jobs. Veblen observed how citizens emulate those better than them and then try to distinguish themselves. With no incentives to improve, humans merely act to survive. Inequality with possession motivates and explains the hegemony of capitalism over socialism.

The civilised way to reduce unequal opportunities is a quality public education system based on demands and acknowledged merit. This means that those with fewer opportunities at birth can socially ascend by making efforts. This took place in Spain between the 1950s and 1980s. Since Zapatero, the Spanish left has fled from educational expectation, which is inconvenient for gaining support and developing its propaganda.

What is priority for Spanish governors is not the good for a country because statespersons no longer exist, but occupying political posts. No-one even thinks in the mid term. Lenin stated that a bad economy was convenient for them so they have someone to protect with a social shield, which is what today’s government does by acting against the self-employed.

The worst inequality, which is even worse than territorial inequality, is that between citizens and politicians. We have twice the number of politicians per capita than a federal country like Germany or a monarchy like the UK. We cannot generalise because a regional member of parliament (MP) is not the same as a European MP, nor is a mayor of a small town the same as a mayor in a large city.

The so-called revolving doors politics is a mechanism by means of which politicians become part of Boards of Directors of important firms, or getting jobs they have dreamed of to ensure their future. It is naive thinking that they occupy these posts for their own worth or ability. With low salaries, we pay gas and electricity at prices among the five most expensive in Europe. This is why the firms that use lots of energy leave Spain, and many Spaniards are cold in winter and hot in summer.

MPs cannot be judged unless the parliament of which they are members grants them permission (letter of request). It is a matter of “You can do the same for me one day”, and judging a politician is an extremely rare event. Yet as the Supreme Court is selected by political parties, this equality in justice is doubtlessly seen as being independent of the government.

Massive parliamentary immunity for politicians is exceptional in Europe. Other privileges are meals, travel, digital devices, low prices in Parliament restaurants, expenses to live elsewhere, official cars, escorts, secretaries, advisors. The salaries of mayors and councillors in large cities are extremely high, and they also decide them.

Regarding retirement, (non-politician) citizens have to pay income tax for 37.5 years to receive 100% retirement pension. A politician who occupies a seat for only 7 years will be paid 80% of the maximum pension, 90% if (s)he has occupied it for 7-9 years and 100% for at least 11 years.

At the same time, there are major deficits in primary healthcare, doctors and ICU beds, judges, work and tax inspectors, and aid to have children. Public debt exceeds 100% GDP, and all this without including the effect of the COVID-19 crisis and unemployment will be over 20% in a few weeks. Financing of pensions is put aside.

In Spain, the way towards more social progress for someone is not education, effort and entrepreneurship, but political. The worst of so much undeserved privileges is the country’s educational, economic, territorial and moral destruction towards which we have moved for some time now.

It is amazing that the mass media keep quiet about politicians’ privileges and when Europe bales out, it does not demand reducing political overspending. If denunciation does away with so much informative banality, things might change. Too many Spaniards are not indignant about the government’s lies, which are laundered by government-supporting mass media. Silencing politicians’ privileges does not expect them to shoulder their responsibility, and favours them feeling superior to citizens.

Post published in Las Provincias

No es la educación ni el esfuerzo el camino más seguro para llegar a lo más alto, sino la consecución de un cargo político.
