Mistaking a tool for an aim ruins individuals (greed), families (marriage policies), institutions (perverse financing) and countries (too much tax). At public university (PU), worse still because salaries are guaranteed, which is an incomprehensible privilege for 3 million Spaniards, which can only be justified by jobs being linked with separation of powers. Nothing is free; someone else pays what is squandered. PU is no essential asset, but many deceived families think it is worth their while. Subsidised up to 80%, they pay for anti-liberal and socialising training. PU training is not necessary for living; so many degree holders make their salaries worse, and it is service that private society can render without being financed by taxes (debt): the vast cost of financing hundreds of thousands of civil servants and very expensive institutions. For two decades, PU has not trained the elite. The expected level has dropped alarmingly and there is no university-business world interaction. The academic criteria of the “quality” of Master’s and PhD degrees go in the opposite way to (innovative) marketable knowledge. Companies do not value Master’s and PhD degrees because they are not good to them. Politicised PU squanders academic staff and students’ energy, capacities and talent (votes take the place of excellence and ethics). The quantitative ideology uses metric indicators that deteriorate PU’s education and research, which are made slaves by rankings that stimulate socially useless disposable production (only good for teachers’ promotion). What results could discriminate interuniversity financing if this were necessary? Certainly rankings based on numbers of publications would not because mountains of publications have neither social repercussions nor social usefulness: the vast majority are not even read (not even by academicians themselves) and are not applied to anything. Such “results” do not deserve any Spaniard not employing PU to pay taxes for it because they have no social repercussion beyond “Academia”. The rankings business awards quantity. To ensure this, risk is removed, ideas are repeated, disposable knowledge is created, and innovation and commercialisation are impossible. It stimulates the “know-how” culture; decadent and obeying narcissism used to show off with guaranteed salaries, paid even by those who do not use the PU. It has indirect effects, like underestimating teaching that marginally counts on personal promotion and rankings that badly educate young teachers in the tyranny of rankings. In this scenario, possibly exhibited outcomes must not be doubtful quantities, but, in any case, unquestionable outcomes. Such as what? True efficiency could be evaluated by stable jobs for degree holders related to their studies; the number of degree holders who enterprise (create jobs), even those students with no degree who enterprise. Obviously those public jobs that generate more tax and debt should not be included. What is public should be for all, not for just a part. The number of degree holders should never be an indicator because the level expected of them would gradually drop so there would be more holders of easier degrees. With unemployment doubling the EU mean, it is unethical for families who do not send their offspring to PU to finance it for those who do, even if they can afford it. Nowadays, students pay 20% of the real PU cost when they should pay at least 50% of this cost, and “very excellent” students with few resources, with grants, should be of national interest and not a matter of egalitarianism. Today PU is a nursery for adolescents, is overcrowded because there are no jobs (almost everything is imported, very little is produced), high taxes and social tax payments prevent contracting (a worker earning 1,250 euros costs businesspeople 2,100 euros). The prevailing socialist/separatist culture punishes the self-employed and businesspeople by making the public sector increase (since 1975 the Spanish population has grown by 10 million people, and in 1 in every 4 is a civil servant). Financing criteria should stimulate taking entrepreneurial risks, contact with companies with practicals, and business Master’s and PhD degrees.

La educación pública se rige por criterios de financiación equivocados que deterioran la formación Dice un proverbio inglés que el dinero es buen servidor pero mal patrón.
